Duncan Bannatyne OBE is a Scottish entrepreneur, philanthropist and author most famous for his appearance as a panellist on the BBC programme Dragons’ Den.
Born in Clydebank, he was raised alongside his siblings in one room of a large house shared with six other families, left school without any qualifications, spent time in military detention and prison, and did not even have a bank account until age 30.
Duncan’s first foray into business was when he moved to Stockton-on-Tees and bought an ice cream van for £450 – he soon expanded his gelato empire and eventually sold it on for £28,000 before founding a nursing home business named Quality Care Homes, which was sold for £26 million in 1997.
Other business over the years included children’s nurseries, hotels, health clubs, spas, media, TV, stage schools, property and transport, which have all contributed to Duncan amassing a fortune – a considerable turnaround from his poverty-stricken youth and wayward coming of age.
He then exploded onto the public eye with his long-term tenure on Dragons’ Den, where for 12 seasons he grilled prospective entrepreneurs who seeked investment into their company.
Alongside his business empire, Duncan is heavily involved in charity work, participating in a wide range of fundraising activities as well as acting as patron to a number of institutions. His tireless charitable contributions saw him bestowed with an OBE, proving testament to his commitment to improving people’s quality of life.
Duncan’s tale of rags-to-riches through sheer perseverance and hard work make him of the most sough- after business speakers for events and private functions. He is equally adept as a keynote speaker for conferences and business events, establishing an underlying theme and ensuring guests enjoy a compelling start to the function.
