Jacqueline Gold

One of Britain's most successful business women

Jacqueline Gold

Jacqueline Gold is an English businesswoman who is Chief Executive of the Gold Group International companies Ann Summers and Knickerbox.

The daughter of businessman David Gold and first wife Beryl Hunt, Jacqueline had a tough upbringing; her parents divorced when she was 12 years old, her mother was overbearingly overprotective, and her stepfather was abusive.

At 19 years old she asked her father, who had recently acquired the Ann Summers chain, if he could give her some work experience. He obliged, offering her a salary of £45 a week, and so began Jacqueline’s corporate journey which would culminate in getting to the top of the career ladder.

Jacqueline was instrumental in changing the appearance and ethos of Ann Summers from a seedy, male-dominated environment to something more classy and feminine.

A chance invitation and visit to a Tupperware party in an East London flat in 1981 gave Jacqueline the idea of selling lingerie and adult toys to women in the privacy of their own homes. She launched the Ann Summers Party Plan – a home marketing plan for sex toys, with a strict “no men allowed” policy. These parties were and remain popular, providing women with an excuse to meet for a party and talk about sex, and have entered British popular culture.

Jacqueline was made Chief Executive of Ann Summers in 1987, and transformed it into a multi-million pound business, with a sales force today of over 7,500 women as party organisers; 136 high street stores in the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands, and an annual turnover of £117 million in 2008.

In her capacity as a speaker, Jacqueline describes how she has reached the top of the corporate world through sheer hard work and perseverance, while not letting childhood trauma and setbacks in adult life thwart your progress. In her words: “I’ve had lots of tragedy in my life, but I refuse to be a victim. There’s nothing like adversity to help me progress forward in life.”
