Digby Jones – or Baron Jones of Birmingham to give him his official title – first became known to audiences worldwide as the director general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), a post he held from 2000 to 2006.
Often outspoken, the motivational speaker – who was knighted in 2004 and made a Lord in 2007 – has also worked for government, holding the post of trade and investment minister between 2007 and 2008, when Labour leader Gordon Brown was the UK Prime Minister and wanted to set up a so-called “government of all talents”.
Lord Jones resigned from this post in 2008 to become the business ambassador for UK trade and investment. In the House of Lords, Jones now sits as a crossbencher after deciding not to join the Labour Party – he has said that he doesn’t do party politics.
Author of the book Fixing Britain – The Business Of Reshaping Our Nation – Lord Digby has held many top positions in business, including chairman of Triumph Motorcycles, Grove Industries and SHP Limited. He has also been corporate ambassador to Jaguar Cars and Aon Risk Solutions, corporate adviser to JCB, senior adviser to Harvey Nash, and non-executive deputy chairman of Unipart’s expert practices division.
In addition, Lord Jones has been business adviser to the Duke of York, vice-patron of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, non-executive director of Leicester Tigers rugby team, and vice-president of The Birmingham Civic Society.
Popular among business people, Lord Jones is a truly motivational speaker and holds audiences enraptured with his direct but often humorous delivery. He has some very forthright and illuminating views on the efficiencies of government, much like he does in the world of business.
