Ian Mullen OBE is a pharmacist, businessman and keynote speaker best known for being a former chairman of the National Health Service in Scotland.
Self-employed almost since qualifying as a pharmacist, he created and operated a successful group of community pharmacies and optical practices across Central Scotland, chaired the national representative body for Scottish community pharmacists along the way and leading the development of new legislation – still current – in the UK Parliament to regulate the opening of new pharmacies.
Ian has served 10 Scottish Health Ministers in a non-executive role and has an extensive understanding of the public sector, having also worked closely with local authorities. As an NHS chairman for 19 years, he chaired 2 NHS Trusts, and a Health Authority. He served as Chair of the Scottish NHS Trust Chairmen’s Group and was elected founder Chairman of the Scottish NHS Chairmen’s Group (2000-2002).
In addition he led the development of a strategy to revolutionise healthcare delivery for the 300,000-strong population of Forth Valley, including the creation of the 860-bed Forth Valley Royal Hospital – the largest healthcare project so far completed in Scotland.
Ian has operated a healthcare consultancy since 1991, and has provided advice to clients such as Tesco plc, Morgan Grenfell, Kleinwort’s, the United States Embassy in London, Schering, Superdrug, Kingfisher plc, Deutsche Bank, Glaxo and Pfizer.
