It has been said in the UK media that mountaineer and renowned big wall climber Andy Kirkpatrick makes bushcraft and survival specialist Ray Mears – who helped police track down the killer Raoul Moat – “look like Paris Hilton”.
The reason that Andy is such a great choice as motivational speaker at any event is that he is able to talk in fascinating (and often hilarious) detail about the range of experiences he has had over the years. For example, he once climbed Yosemite’s El Capitan – known to be one of the hardest walls in America – and raised £1m for Help for Heroes. Similarly, he raised £1.5m for Sports Relief climbing with frostbitten toes but he also provided stunt safety advice to the makers of the film Charlie and the Chocolate factory.
Author of the book Psychovertical, Andy Kirkpatrick has said that he doesn’t climb to break records or achieve world firsts, he climbs to test himself and push himself to new levels. To this end, he will very often attempt climbs – sometimes more than 100m high – that are laden with danger and the likelihood of achieving them is in serious doubt. However, as if that wasn’t enough, he has attempted ascents with a blind colleague and a paraplegic climber.
Andy is a truly motivational speaker because he describes making some of the hardest climbs in the world – one 15-day 1000m ascent being the subject of the Cold Haul movie – and links that with the goal of pushing oneself to and beyond accepted limits.
Diagnosed with severe dyslexia when he was 19, Andy has overcome all the obstacles that were put before him (and continues to do so) and this comes across in a truly inspiring presentation that audiences and conference organisers simply cannot get enough of.
