A member of parliament (MP) and of the Labour party from 1992 to 2015, the Rt Hon Dame Tessa Jowell is a motivational speaker who has had experience at the highest levels of power in Britain.
However, she has also helped poor and troubled families in London, working as a childcare officer in Brixton and as a psychiatric social worker in Southwark. Other posts include being a councillor in Camden, where she campaigned successfully for equal pay, and as a cabinet minister where she set up Sure Start for children. However, under the coalition government of 2010-15, cuts were made in Sure Start funding and alternative arrangements promoted. Jowell has insisted that Sure Start be restored “to its founding principles [to] make sure every child has every chance”.
Perhaps motivational speaker Jowell’s main claim to fame is that she decided – and convinced members of the Labour government at the time – to put London forward for the 2012 Olympics. The capital won the bid and delivered what is regarded in many circles as one of the best Olympic Games in recent times.
Among the governmental positions that Tessa has held are culture, media and sport secretary, minister for regional affairs, minister in the Department for Work and Pensions, minister in the Department for Education and Employment (New Deal and for women), and minister for public health.
