Sir James Dyson

Entrepreneurial inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner

James Dyson

At one time, the vacuum cleaner manufacturer Hoover dominated the market, with the company’s name turning into a generic verb for cleaning floors – “to Hoover” – even when rival machines were being used. But then came the inventor and motivational speaker Sir James Dyson and even though the verb “to Dyson” has not become commonplace the days of Hoover driving the market have come to an end. These days, vacuum cleaner manufacturers tend to follow the trail that Dyson blazes throughout the industry.

Entrepreneurial engineer Sir James – he was knighted in 2006 for his services to business – founded his company in 1978 after he became disillusioned with the performance of the cleaner he was using. The Dyson company is owned by the Holkham Group, which in 2015 paid Sir James £80m in dividends.

In the same year the company also paid out over £9m to the James Dyson Foundation, which the motivational speaker created in 2001 to support design and engineering education. Also in 2015, the foundation gave £12m to Imperial College London to create the Dyson School of Design Engineering with the aim of providing a four-year Masters degree in design engineering.

When he invented the bagless vacuum cleaner, Sir James epitomised the ultimate in fresh thinking – instead of tweaking an existing product he took a step back and looked at how the humble vacuum cleaner could be transformed. And the result was so popular that the Dyson Dual Cyclone became the best-selling vacuum cleaner in the UK in just 18 months of it entering the market.

James continues to give back money through the James Dyson foundation – which enables younger generations to innovate and challenge the possibilities of engineering with the support of grants.

Most people don’t realise how much James Dyson has actually changed their lives, but this is a small part of who James Dyson is. If you want someone who spent his life trying to bring about technical innovation in the British society, then James is one of the finest engineering speakers you can hire.
