Patrick Mercer

Military Historian & Former Colonel

You know when you book motivational speaker Patrick Mercer for your event that he is going to express views that are forthright. You also know he has the breadth of experience to relate stories and anecdotes that will keep your delegates or audience engaged and fascinated.

Widely known as a member of the UK parliament for Newark between 2001 and 2014 (13 of those years as a Conservative MP and one as an independent), Mercer was shadow minister for homeland security at the Home Office from 2003 to 2007.

The motivational speaker has also been a member of the following select committees – the ecclesiastical committee, the home affairs committee, the draft civil contingencies bill joint committee, and the defence committee.

Although he is now no longer an active MP – having been sacked by Prime Minister David Cameron in 2007 and resigning again in 2014 – Patrick Mercer has written several books in recent years. These include 2009’s To Do And Die, the following year’s Dust And Steel and 2011’s Red Runs The Helmand.

The son of a former Bishop of Exeter, motivational speaker Mercer attended the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst and went on to join the British Army where he held the positions of second lieutenant, lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel and colonel. He got an MBE for his nine years’ service in Northern Ireland and an OBE for the time he was in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mercer retired from active army service in 1999.
