Ken Livingstone is a British Labour politician who has twice held the leading political role in London regional government, serving as the Leader of the Greater London Council (GLC) from 1981 until the Council was abolished in 1986, and then as the first elected Mayor of London from the creation of the office in 2000 until 2008. He also served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brent East from 1987 to 2001.
During his time overlooking the nation’s capital, Ken introduced the Oyster Card, Congestion Charge and oversaw the successful London 2012 Olympics bid, while his strong leadership during the London bombings in 2005 was widely praised and brought him considerable international attention.
Born to a working-class family in Lambeth, Kevin joined Labour in 1968 and was elected to represent Norwood at the GLC in 1973, Hackney North and Stoke Newington in 1977, and then Paddington in 1981. That year, he was internally elected leader of the GLC by Labour members.
After Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair prevented Livingstone from standing as Labour’s candidate in the 2000 election to be Mayor of London, Livingstone successfully contested it as an independent candidate, and four years later he was invited to stand as Labour’s candidate – a chance he took with success.
Aside from his political career, Ken makes popular regular appearances on Have I Got News For You, a phone-in host for LBC 97.3 and even made a guest appearance on a Blur Album. Ken also maintains strong links with charities, pressure groups and local organisations that he has held close for many years.
