Danny Crates

Multiple gold medal winning Paralympian

Wow. Who could fail to be inspired by motivational speaker Danny Crates when he recounts his story of how he lost his right arm in a car accident then took up athletics and won gold medal after gold medal.

Four years after his 1994 accident, Danny won a silver medal in the 4 x 400m at the World Championships. Two years later, he won a bronze in the 400m at the Sydney Paralympics. Then his track performances went into the stratosphere.

European Championships golds came in the 400m in 2001 and the 800m in 2003 and 2005. Danny also won 800m gold medals at the 2003 World Indoor Championships and at two Paralympic World Cups (2006 and 2007), bettering his silver at the same distance in 2005. The motivational speaker repeated his gold-winning feat at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and the 2006 World Championships. Also in 2004, Danny broke the 800m world record.

Other achievements of this incredibly competitive and committed athlete include carrying the Olympic torch in the London relay in 2008, carrying the flag at the opening ceremony of that year’s Summer Paralympics in Beijing, and running in the London Grand Prix the following year, after which he retired from athletics.

The motivational speaker has also provided TV commentary on paralympic sport, wrote an autobiography called Danny Boy and is regularly to be found playing competitive rugby with able-bodied players.
