Football speaker and former player Denis Law CBE is one of the most successful Scottish players in British footballing history, with more than a decade spent at Manchester United “the Lawman” continues to be a popular sports speaker at club events and to this day holds the number 2 spot on the club’s goal scoring chart, topped only by team mate and fellow football speaker Bobby Charlton who succeeds him 249 goals to 237.
Beginning his career aged just sixteen Denis Law CBE spent his first four years at Huddersfield Town until he was bought by Manchester City for a record breaking transfer fee, spending just a single season with the club Law went on to break a second transfer fee record when he moved to Italian club Torino in 1961. Though his years at Huddersfield, Man City and Torino were successful and marked Law as a talented centre forward it was not until he returned to the UK in 1962 to join Man U that Law truly found his feet. Part of the League Cup winning team in both ’65 and ‘67 Law holds many a fond memory of his time at United and, to this day, makes regular appearances at club after dinner speaker events.
Retiring in 1975 Denis continues to hold the record of most goals scored in a single season for Manchester United and for most goals scored for his national team, Scotland. Law was capped fifty five times for his home team and played as part of their 1974 World Cup team. Denis Law CBE is the only Scottish player to be awarded the Ballon d’Or which he won in 1964. As well as working as an after dinner speaker for Manchester United Denis Law CBE has been called upon a number of times to appear as a sports speaker for the Scottish national team and is still considered one of the greatest players in the club’s history.
Since his retirement Denis has appeared a number of times on both television and radio as a summarizer and football speaker, commentating on a variety of football games; he was made an Inaugural Inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 in recognition of his impact on the English game and, that same year, United erected a statue of Law at the Scoreboard End at Old Trafford and in 2010 he replaced the late Sir Bobby Robson as the Patron of the UK charity Football Aid.
