To some, Dwain Chambers is the third fastest Briton of all time on the athletics track; to others he is the sprinter who tested positive for a banned steroid after winning a gold medal; and to businesses and organisations everywhere he is the motivational speaker with an inspirational story.
Chambers was stripped of the 100m medal that was given to him in 2002 and banned from competitive sport for two years. However, before then he had built up a reputation as a superb sprinter, culminating in his 100m personal best of 9.97 seconds in 1999.
From an early age Chambers was crossing the line before the other runners. Back in 1995 – when he was just 17 – he came first in the European Junior Championships 100m and repeated the feat in 1997. Two years later the motivational speaker beat everyone in the European Cup 100m, two years after that he did it again in the Goodwill Games 100m and in 2006 came first in the World Cup 4 x 100m. In the World Indoor Championships 60m in 2008 Dwain came second but got back to his winning ways at the following year’s European Indoor Championships 60m.
Dwain Chambers won many other medals – eight golds in all as well as four silvers and three bronzes. There are some – including some fellow athletes who also lost their medals when Chambers was banned – who will never forget what he did but Dwain tells audiences that he learnt a valuable life lesson and that others can benefit from his experience.
