If any athlete ever deserved an Olympic gold medal, it’s badminton star Gail Emms MBE. While the motivational speaker did get a silver in the mixed doubles (with partner Nathan Robertson) at the 2004 Athens Games, it was other competitions where she achieved real champion status.
Gail’s first gold came in 2002 in mixed team badminton at the Manchester Commonwealth Games (where she also got a women’s doubles bronze) and she followed this up with a gold two years later at the Geneva European Championships. But it was 2006 where Emms really hit the big time – earning herself three gold medals in a single year.
In the World Championships, Gail won the mixed doubles and repeated the feat in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne (where she also got a mixed team silver and a women’s doubles bronze). The motivational speaker’s third gold of the year came in the European Championships’ women’s doubles.
After retiring as a professional athlete, Gail Emms – she was awarded her MBE in 2009 – went on to help motivate young people to get into sports more and to live as healthy a life as possible. To this end, she became a Youth Sport Trust and Badminton Sport England Ambassador. Then she began her career as a motivational speaker where she has proved extremely popular, sharing with audiences her experiences at the very peak of competitive sport.
