Gareth Thomas

Openly gay Welsh Rugby star and TV pundit

The former international rugby player Gareth Thomas hit the headlines recently when he revealed that he had been secretly gay since he was around 16 years old – his wife of five years left him and he was literally suicidal.

However, he was given the Stonewall hero of the year award and was at one point voted the most influential gay person in the UK. This motivational speaker’s heartbreaking, gripping and inspiring story holds audiences spellbound when he appears at private functions or corporate events.

Of course, Gareth also has plenty of stories to share from his time as a major player in the world of rugby, where he made himself into what he has called “a beast of a man… good at rugby”. Until 2011, Thomas was the most capped Welsh rugby union player (with 100 test match appearances) and he has also represented his country four times in the rugby league, scoring three tries.

At club level, Gareth has played rugby union for Cardiff RFC, Cardiff Blues, Bridgend, Toulouse and the Celtic Warriors. After retiring from the sport in 2011, he became a Rugby World Cup analyst for ITV. He has also appeared in Celebrity Big Brother, coming third, in Dancing on Ice, and on the talent show Get Your Act Together.
