Johnny Herbert has enjoyed one of the most diverse and successful careers in motorsport. His incredible career laid the foundation for a golden age of British motor racing and continues to play an involved role in the sport as a commentator for Sky Sports F1. A renowned motorsport speaker, Johnny engages audiences and gives an insight into one of the most intense and mentally demanding sports around.
Known for his exploits in Formula One and Le Mans racing, Johnny began his racing career in the mid-1980s. Winning the 1985 Formula Ford Festival, Johnny’s pace caught the attention of Eddie Jordan and together they won the British Formula Three title two years later in 1987. In 1988, Johnny was a hopeful championship contender for the International Formula 3000 championship, however a horrific collision with barriers at Brands Hatch saw him badly break his legs and count him out from racing until 1989.
Drawing upon a huge amount of courage, Johnny returned to racing in 1989 despite the fact outside the car he could barely walk. Johnny was now racing in Formula One for the Benetton Team managed by friend Peter Collins and went on to score points on his racing return at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Johnny’s miraculous journey to overcome the adversity of injury and gain the drive and determination to return to the sport make him one of the most highly sought after motorsport speakers.
Johnny became a regular in Formula One between 1990-2000, racing for Lotus, Ligier, Benetton, Sauber, Stewart and Jaguar. In all, Johnny featured on the podium seven times, with two victories in 1995 and one in 1999. After retiring from Formula One in 2000, Johnny switched his focus to sports car racing in an attempt to recreate his 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours victory with the legendary Mazda 787B. Johnny enjoyed class leading performances in the ALMS and BTCC along with many competitive Le Mans campaigns. Johnny is a sportsman who knows how to realise ambitions and achieve goals, making him an ideal motorsport speaker for both social and business environments.
Johnny now forms an elemental part of the Sky Sports F1 broadcasting team, travelling to each race to provide world class punditry and knowledge in a number of weekly shows alongside full coverage of proceedings on race weekends. Johnny’s colourful personality as a TV presenter relates well to F1 fans, adding his own view on highlights of the race with infectious enthusiasm and expert analytical content.
