Sir Alex Ferguson CBE is a motivational speaker who has achieved virtually everything there is to achieve in the world of football.
Ferguson’s incredibly successful career managing Manchester United for 26 years tends to overshadow how well he did before joining the club in 1986. Nearly 30 years earlier, Sir Alex began his footballing career as a player in Scotland where he scored 66 goals for Dunfermline Athletic, 37 for Falkirk, 25 for Rangers, 19 for St Johnstone, 15 for Queen’s Park and nine for Ayr United. He also scored 10 goals for the Scotland national team in just nine appearances.
Ending his playing career in 1974, Sir Alex moved into management, still in Scotland. Teams he was in charge of were East Stirlingshire, St Mirren and Aberdeen (he also stepped in at one stage to manage the national team). In just three years the motivational speaker took St Mirren from low down in the Scottish Second Division to champions of the First Division.
But it was at Aberdeen that Ferguson’s managerial talents really took off – in just seven years he led the club to win the Scottish Premier Division three times, the Scottish Cup four times, the Scottish League Cup once, the Drybrough Cup once, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup once and the UEFA Super Cup once. In the 30 years since Ferguson left, Aberdeen never won the league again or any European trophies and attained just one Scottish Cupa (but three Scottish League Cups).
When he left Aberdeen in 1986, Sir Alex was linked with various clubs, including Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, but he chose Manchester United who were second from the bottom of the First Division when he took over. Ending United’s 26-year league title drought, Ferguson led the club to an amazing 13 Premier League trophies, five FA Cups, four League Cups and 10 Charity Shields/Community Shields. Internationally, the motivational speaker took United to new heights, winning two Champions League titles (formerly the European Cup), and one each of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
In recognition of his achievements, Ferguson was awarded the OBE in 1983 and the CBE in 1995 and he was knighted in 1999.
