As part of Educating Yorkshire Matthew worked as the Assistant Headteacher of Thornhill Academy, teaching English classes as well. His true advocacy for bettering education and making sure that each student is enriched to achieve their potential has recently seen Matthew appointed to the role of Head Teacher. Often questioned whether Educating Yorkshire is the highlight of his career, Matthew is quick to deny the statement. Instead, Matthew’s greatest pleasure and the highlight of his career is seeing the success of each and every student that he has been able to develop and educate throughout their journey at his school.
Matthew’s greatest feat in Educating Yorkshire is often claimed to be when he helped student Mushy to overcome the struggles of his stammer. Matthew helped Mushy by getting him to listen to music whilst he was reading aloud, something that Matthew was inspired to try after watching The Kings Speech. Often a topic of his motivational speeches, Matthew draws upon the immense impact that he had on this student to encourage other educational professionals to better the relationships that they have with their students. Matthew often credits this moment as a pivotal example of his understanding of the power of teaching.
Alongside his dedicated role as Head Teacher at Thornhill, Matthew also shares his time with delivering a number of keynote speeches and workshops up and down the country. Truly passionate about the power of teaching, Matthew is keen to help all students who may be more educationally deprived than others. He is a strong believer of helping and enriching each and every student, offering a plethora of different strategies in which other educational professionals can use to better their support of students.
Having recently spoken at the 2019 Professional Learning Conference, it is without a doubt that Matthew is a revered and popular education and youth speaker. An expert in academia, Matthew delivers keynote addresses in a number of educational settings to a broad range of demographics.
