Famed for being the first professional Transgender racing driver, Charlie Martin has enjoyed a successful career at the heights of the motorsport industry. Currently racing for Praga, Charlie has competed in countless top-tier motorsports competitions, including the Michelin Le Mans Cup and the Britcar Endurance Championships. Using her status as a prominent racing driver, Charlie has shared her journey as a transgender woman and advocates for transgender and LGBT rights. As a child, Charlie struggled with her identity, ultimately transitioning to female and now using her prominence as a driver to promote transgender rights and anti-discrimination. Calling for the normalisation of LGBT+ representation in motorsports and sports as a whole, Charlie broke glass ceilings when she became the first professional transgender racing driver. Charlie’s first major competition saw her compete in the Hillclimb Leaders Championships racing a Peugeot 205. Other prominent wins have followed, including finishing in fourth place at the Michelin Le Mans Cup in 2019, fourth place at 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2020 and 2nd place in Class B of the 2017 Race of Remembrance. She is also a regular racer at the Ginetta GT5 Challenge and the German VLN Championship.
The first transgender driver to be affiliated with the FIA Formula E, Charlie has advocated for inclusion in motorsports throughout her time as a driver. She led a campaign to have drivers run rainbow flags in support of the LGBT community and Pride Month at the British GT and Ginetta GT5 Challenge and also became the first Sports Ambassador for Stonewall. She is also part of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign and acts as part of the Athlete Ally’s Ambassador Programme. Additionally, Charlie acts as a Racing Pride Ambassador and advocates for transgender representation and awareness on her YouTube channel – Girl For All Seasons.
