What Is The Metaverse?

The Metaverse is believed to be the future of the internet, described as a ‘network of 3D virtual worlds focussed on social connection’. The Metaverse is accessed by the use of virtual and augmented reality, as well as with game consoles, phones and PCs. Also described as a ‘simulated digital environment’ with ‘rich user interaction mimicking the real world’, the Metaverse allows an escape from reality along with a digital economy in which users can make, purchase and sell goods.

Who Created The Term Metaverse?

Although the term may seem futuristic to many, the phrase Metaverse was first introduced in the 1992 novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Neal Stephenson is a New York Times Bestselling author, who has entertained readers with his complex and thrilling speculative fiction works.

Several years later, in 2011, the term was reimagined by Ernest Cline. In his science fiction novel, Ready Player One, Ernest imagines a dystopian worldwide virtual reality game similar to what the metaverse is believed to be like in reality.

Most recently, Facebook has adopted the term Metaverse, renaming their empire of social media networks under the name ‘Meta ’.

Who Is Working On The Metaverse?

Many of the world’s leading brands are working on their own Metaverse concepts, including the likes of Disney and McDonald’s to name but a few.

Disney has announced its plans to introduce the Metaverse into their empire, recognising that the future of their brand will include ‘blending physical and digital experiences’.

Fast-food giant McDonald’s have also filed trademark applications, hoping to secure the rights for a Metaverse-based ‘virtual restaurant’.
