A former midfielder, with a playing career lasting over a decade, John's club career began at Brøndby IF where he became one of the club's top players as they became prolific winners domestically - he would mark his performances with the Danish Player of the Year award in 1987 and in 1990 John helped the club to the semi-final of the UEFA Cup.
His international career saw him score four goals in 69 caps for the Danish National Football Team, making him 23rd in the all-time appearance list. He became a Danish footballing legend when in the final of the 1992 European Football Championships he scored the opening goal in Denmark's 2–0 win over Germany.
His performances also won him a move to Arsenal FC where George Graham signed him to play in the club's central midfield position. He made a total of 99 appearances for Arsenal, helping them to win the FA Cup in the 1992-93 season, as well as the European Cup Winners Cup in 1993-94. He would also score a spot-kick in the 1993 Charity Shield final defeat against Manchester United.
After leaving Arsenal, Jensen returned to Brøndby IF to make a further 90 appearances for the club. He would later turn his hand to coaching in 1999, becoming the player/manager of Herfølge BK where he would lead them to Danish Superliga glory at his first attempt. Jensen then followed Michael Laudrup to Brøndby IF as Assistant Manager and later to Getafe in the Spanish La Liga. He would also become Assistant Manager at Blackburn Rovers and later in 2018 the caretaker manager of the Denmark National Football team.
