An instantly recognisable celebrity, Sandy Lyle had an exceptionally successful career winning two major championships on the PGA tour; The Open Championship and The Masters Tournament. For many golf fans, he is remembered for his fantastic bunker shot at the 18th hole in the final round of the Masters in 1988. He went on to win the tournament and became the first Briton to don the infamous green jacket. In all, Lyle won 32 professional tournaments throughout his career.
Having turned professional in 1977, he won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award in 1978 and went on to become the European Tour Order of Merit winner in 1979, 1980 and 1985. He spent a total of 167 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking and was a truly dominant force throughout the 1980s. He was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Order (MBE) in 1987.
On multiple occasions he was a member of the winning Ryder Cup team, establishing his reputation as one of the leading golfers within Europe and the World. Lyle was a member of the Ryder Cup team that won at the Belfry in 1985 and in 1987, the team that won for the first time ever on American soil.
