Born and raised in the Barking area of East London, he played most of his career for West Ham United, making 647 appearances for the club, and won the 1975 FA Cup and the 1980 FA in which he scored the only goal. He was also the club’s player of the season on four occasions and caretaker manager on two occasions in 2003.
Trevor was noted for his intelligent play, making the number 10 shirt his own at the Boleyn Ground, and his style exemplified the traditional pass and move style that West Ham had been associated with during the late sixties and early seventies. His illustrious 19-year career also saw him earn 47 caps for England, scoring five times along the way. He made his Three Lions debut in 1974 against Portugal, and appeared in two major tournaments.
It would not be long before the plaudits began flowing, and in 1981 he was was appointed as Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), elevated to Commander (CBE) in 1999, and knighted in 2004. In addition, a stand at Upton Park was named after him in 2009. An eloquent sports speaker, at the end of 2003 Brooking was named as the Director Of Football at the Football Association – a role that he still holds to this day.
