May played a key role in the team as Blackburn Rovers were promoted to the Premier League, before helping the side to record a second-place finish. In 1994 he would transfer to Manchester United for a £1.2 million fee.
At Manchester United, May was bought with the future in mind, with an ageing partnership of Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister at centre back. He would get his early opportunities at right-back due to injuries to Paul Parker.
After vying for a place at right-back with upcoming star, Gary Neville, May was given a starting berth at centre back in the 1996-97 season displacing Steve Bruce. He would help United to retain the League title that season, as well as help them to a Champions League semi-final. At this time, he received his first call up to the England team, but would never be capped.
Despite less game time in the years that followed, due to the signings of Jaap Stam and Henning Berg, May become essential to United's historic treble-winning season in 1998-99. With a huge quantity of fixtures to play in, May was rotated in and out of the team by Sir Alex Ferguson; he played in the FA Cup Final and was a substitute for the Champions League final.
May won numerous trophies during his time with the Red Devils winning the Premier League twice, the FA Cup twice, the FA Charity Shield twice and the UEFA Champions League during a nine-year spell at Manchester United, where he became a fan favourite, still celebrated by the Old Trafford faithful today. He is even immortalised in song, as the United fans would chant, "David May, superstar! Got more medals than Shearer!"
A wonderful football speaker able to entertain crowds with stories and anecdotes from his time in the game, May is a uniquely engaging expert on football and motivational speaker for schools and businesses, allowing them to thrive.
