Geoffrey Hinton, commended as the “Godfather of AI”, is the Co-founder and Chief Scientific Adviser of the Vector Institute. Formerly the VP and Engineering Fellow of Google, he raised eyebrows when he stepped down from this role after 10 years, admitting that he was weary of the looming risks of AI. Today, Geoffrey can be booked for a myriad of events where he shares more about his successful career and what he sees for the future of AI.
Recipient of the A.M. Turing Award, an equal of the Nobel Prize in the field of Computing, Geoffrey has led a spectacular career. He has a strong academic background and has been a Research Fellow in Cognitive Studies at Sussex University, Visiting Scholar for the University of California, a Scientific Officer at the MRC Applied Psychology Unit and an Associate Professor at Carnegie-Mellon University. Currently he is the Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. He has also been credited with designing AlexNet with his protégés Ilya Sutskever and Alex Krizhevsky, an invention that is talked about fondly to this day. He also brought notice to the back-propagation method and Forward-Forward algorithm.
Geoffrey’s Vector Institute is a renowned non-profit organisation that has dedicated itself to the research of AI. Founded by Geoffrey in 2017, it is economically backed by the Canadian Government. He has also been the Founding Director of the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at UCL. Geoffrey has earned incredible respect as a leader of AI, through his work in deep learning and expertise in neural networks. However now, Geoffrey is cautioning everybody that generative AI can elicit the spread of misinformation, proving to be a threat to humanity.
The IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award, IEEE RSE James Clerk Maxwell Gold Medal, IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Medal recipient, Geoffrey was also named Companion of the Order of Canada. He was also part of The Bloomberg 50 and 50 Most Powerful People in Canadian Business list. With the rapid growth in AI, Geoffrey states in no uncertain terms that AI will one day become more intelligent than human beings – a cause for concern. He has called for the pause of further development in AI till necessary safeguards are in place. If you are looking for a pioneer of AI to speak at your next event, there are few speakers as experienced as the revered Geoffrey Hinton. Book him today!
