Bokani Tshidzu’s unique art is meant to mesmerize, move, immerse people into its narrative. Using textures, patterns and colours that draw attention to the pieces, she is able to weave in stories and sensibilities from her African heritage whilst also melding elements from western art to her work. Adding another medium through which she can communicate with the world, climate campaigner Bokani is now available to speak at events on topics that matter to her such as social and environmental issues.
Popularly known for her time on BBC’s The Big Painting Challenge Programme, where she was fan-favourite receiving the public vote in the first week, Bokani’s roots and humble beginnings are less known about. Hailing from Zimbabwe, Bokani was orphaned early on in her life. While she moved to London in her teenage, she is still very connected with her African roots and it often shows in her work. The visuals she creates with varying hues, textures and patterns almost make her art feel like poetry on canvas to onlookers. Her art uses urgent, gestural movements that are plays on colour. She is now also dabbling into virtual art and augmented reality to create magic. Her desire to create art full of integrity, honesty and freedom is evident through her work.
Graduating with a BSc in Politics and Economics from the University of Bath, Bokani worked in fields like investment and banking, for political moguls like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and as the Founder of a Sustainability Software Firm, before she began to pursue art professionally. Today, she has done several exhibitions and contributed to publications like The Independent, The Telegraph and The Guardian. She also pursued her MA in Fine Arts with a specialisation in Computational Art from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2022, adding one more layer of her credibility and proficiency as an artist.
An excellent communicator, with experience working in diverse fields, Bokani is now using her platform to communicate about social and environmental issues that matters to her such as African heritage, the identity of women and the importance of belonging and climate change.
