Alex Atherton is an award-winning keynote speaker, leadership coach and specialist in Generation Z and the multigenerational workplace. Known for his engaging delivery and practical insight, Alex helps organisations understand how to recruit, retain and motivate younger talent while improving communication across teams of different ages. With more than 25 years of leadership experience, including over a decade as Headteacher of inner-London secondary schools, he brings a rare combination of frontline leadership expertise and deep understanding of human behaviour. His ability to translate complex workplace challenges into clear, actionable strategies has made him one of the UK’s most respected voices on generational change in business.
Alex first became interested in the generational divide after repeatedly hearing young people labelled as ‘snowflakes’ throughout his education career. Rather than accept the stereotype, he began researching the attitudes, motivations and expectations shaping Generation Z. That work evolved into his acclaimed book, ‘The Snowflake Myth: Explaining Gen Z in the Workplace and Beyond’, which became an Amazon best seller and established Alex as a trusted authority on the future workforce. Today, he works closely with leadership teams, HR professionals and learning and development departments, helping organisations turn age diversity into a genuine competitive advantage. His sessions focus on improving recruitment, engagement, retention and workplace culture, all with practical solutions that leaders can apply immediately.
Alongside speaking, Alex has built an impressive career in consultancy and executive coaching. He serves as Consultant Improvement Partner for Haringey Education Partnership and previously held the role of Lead Advisor for the Russell Education Trust. He also worked as Education Advisor to the UK Parliament’s Youth Violence Commission, contributing insight into the challenges facing young people and communities. As an accredited Senior Practitioner Leadership Coach and Mentor with EMCC Global, Alex coaches senior leaders and organisations through periods of change and transformation. His academic and professional qualifications include the ILM Level 7 Diploma for Executive and Senior Level Coaches and Mentors, alongside certifications in team coaching and leadership development.
Organisations book Alex because his talks deliver measurable impact. Clients consistently praise his ability to challenge assumptions, improve understanding between generations and provide practical tools that strengthen workplace performance. One organisation completely redesigned its recruitment process following his keynote, while another ranked him among the highest-rated external speakers at a national conference. In 2025, Alex’s influence and speaking ability were recognised internationally when he became Winner of the Speaker Awards 2025. Whether addressing leadership conferences, corporate events or management teams, Alex delivers insightful, energetic and thought-provoking presentations that help businesses future-proof their workforce and create environments where every generation can thrive together.
