Jo Ruxton is the Founder and former Director of Ocean Generation, and a passionate and tireless advocate for ocean conservation. Jo spent seven years working with the World Wildlife Foundation in Hong Kong, where she was a key player in establishing their marine conservation programme that was started in 1990. She then joined the BBC Natural History Unit where she worked closely with The Blue Planet production team. Jo believes that humans are visual creatures who can learn much more through impeccable visuals than by reading on a topic. Thus, she began working on her celebrated documentary, “A Plastic Ocean” where she hoped to raise awareness, educate, and engage audiences on the perils of plastic pollution. In 2009, she co-founded the Plastic Oceans Foundation, as a means to fund the documentary feature, and it went on to win numerous accolades and was featured in 70 countries in 15 languages.
Jo has filmed several underwater projects over the years, through which she had the opportunity to travel all over the world including Antarctica, the Caribbean and traverse the Pacific Ocean. As an advocate for ocean and marine conservation, Jo sees the merit in providing educational programmes in schools to raise awareness on these issues. She has thus began raising the issue of increasing conversations about ocean conservation in the national school curriculum.
Honoured with an MBE in 2022 for her outstanding contributions to marine conservation, Jo Ruxton has also shared the stage with Sir David Attenborough at the House of Commons, where she took a leading role in advocating for the plastic movement.
