Emily Penn is the Founder and Director of Exxpedition – a non-profit organisation, led by women, resolved to educating people about the relationship between plastics, toxics, and female health. An ocean advocate who is passionate about formulating solutions to the several environmental challenges sustained by our society, Emily is an excellent speaker who is keen to share more of her expertise and vision when hired for a wide range of events.
An expert on plastic pollution, with over 15 years of experience in bringing light to the plastic issue, she delivered the TEDx talk “The Body Burden of Our Plastic Problem” in 2016. A seasoned speaker, she has delivered several other TEDx talks such as “What Does It Mean to Be an Ocean Advocate?” and “A Shift in Thinking Will Change the World”. In her role as Founder of SHiFT.how platform at SAP, she helped businesses find their footing in tackling ocean plastic pollution. Emily has also been an Ocean Rescue Ambassador & Special Advisor for Sky and is currently a Trustee at the Nekton Foundation and an Ambassador of Finisterre – causes that are dedicated to protecting the ocean.
An alumnus of the University of Cambridge where she obtained her BA in Architecture, Emily served as the Co-Head of the ARCSOC committee at the University of Cambridge Architecture Society. Accepting a job offer in Australia, Emily made the phenomenal decision not to travel by air but by a bio-fuelled boat - Earthrace. This gave her the opportunity to spearhead the largest community waste clean-up effort from Tongan Island. Recipient of several accolades, Emily has won the 2016 Fitzroy Award at the Ocean Awards, the Seamaster Award and is the youngest and only female winner of the Yachtmaster of the Year award. Her expertise has also been of great value to organisations such as Sky, Apple, ASOS and the University of Cambridge previously.
Co-founder and former Director of Pangaea Explorations, Emily has worked with scientists, filmmakers, and others to traverse the secluded parts of the world in search of solutions to the global challenges faced by society today. For her exemplary work over the years, Emily was appointed BEM in the 2021 New Year Honour’s List.
