Melanie Nakagawa is the Corporate Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer for Microsoft. Formerly a Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Climate and Energy at the National Security Council for the White House, Melanie is on a mission to find solutions to the persisting climate change issue. Melanie’s illustrious career began in 2003 when she served as a Senior Research Associate at the Public International Law & Policy Group. Equipped with a BA in International Relations from Brown University, MA in International Affairs, Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University School or International Service and a Juris Doctorate from American University Washington College of Law, she served as an Attorney for the International Programme at the Natural Resources Defence Council, before becoming the Senior Energy and Environment Counsel for the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Melanie’s career at the White House continued to go from strength to strength as she took on more and more esteemed positions like Member of the Secretary of State's Policy Planning Staff for the US Department of State and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Transformation for the US Department of State.
Exhibiting a deep passion to solve the imminent climate change problem that is plaguing our world, Melanie has undertaken several roles throughout her career to make a difference. In 2017, she became a Non-Resident Fellow on the Centre on Global Energy Policy, and the Director of Climate Strategy at Princeville Capital. After spending some time as a Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Climate and Energy, Melanie took on her current role as Corporate Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer for Microsoft.
