Known initially for his incredible depictions of some of the most iconic theatre roles, Simon has had the opportunity to play a wide range of parts, such as Titus Andronicus, Mozart in Amadeus and Faust to Oscar Wilde in The Importance of Being Oscar, Captain Hook and Pozzo in Waiting for Godot. Moreover, during his theatre career, he has worked opposite some hugely iconic names such as Sir Ian McKellen, Ronald Pickup and Patrick Stewart.
Also a critically acclaimed author, Simon has written books such as Being an Actor, Shooting the Actor, biographies of Charles Dicken and Oscar Wilde, and much more. Also, he often writes pieces for The Guardian. As a respected actor, he has appeared in numerous films including The Phantom of the Opera, Shakespeare in Love, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Howards End, Postcards from the Edge, A Room with a View and Amadeus. In recognition of his tremendous work, Simon was awarded a CBE in 1999 for his outstanding services to acting.
Not only is Simon a leading actor and author, but he is also a patron for a number of charities such as Dance Umbrella, the Terrence Higgins Trust and the Child Poverty Action Group. In 2014, he appeared in a comedy sketch made for Channel 4's The Feeling Nuts Comedy Night to raise awareness of testicular cancer. Simon also regularly works to raise awareness for minorities such as the LGBTQ+ community. In 2007, he was listed 28th in The Independent's most influential gay men and women in the UK.
