A passionate sustainability scientist and political economist, Maja Göpel has made it her mission to see that the future is more sustainable. For over two decades, Maja has been at the forefront of sustainable development and pioneered various solutions as a future justice campaigner, author and transformation expert. Keen to change mindsets and actions toward sustainability, Maja is now booked as a speaker for corporate events to share her passion for an improved future.
Maja is currently working as the Research Director of The New Institute and has former experience as the Secretary-General of the WBGU and Head of the Berlin Office for Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. In her role as Research Director, Maja is passionate to craft The New Institute into an organisation that propels advanced studies and creates a platform for a changed world. With vast experience working in scientific policy, Maja is widely regarded as an industry-leading authority in her sector.
Before forging her successful career, Maja achieved a Diploma in Media Planning, Developing and Consulting. She then spent two years as a Lecturer at the University of Hamburg, teaching in International Relations and European Studies. She later returned to education to complete PhD studies at York University and the University of Kassel, graduating with a PhD in Global Political Economy, Hegemony Theory and Institutionalism. During her studies, Maja worked as a trade expert for Friends of the Earth Germany before graduating and working as the Director of Future Justice at the World Economic Forum.
Other prominent roles of Maja’s include being the Head of the Berlin Office for the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy and being a member of the Club of Rome. She has also had the opportunity to author her own books, writing Unsere Welt neu denken: Eine Einladung (Rethinking Our World: An Invitation) and The Great Mindshift. Her books explore the state of the world, system transformation and political-economical theory.
