Philip Rosedale is one of a kind in his field, a tech entrepreneur with a knack of developing virtual worlds that are born from innovative ideas. Philip was interested in technology and computers from a young age and used to sell database systems to small businesses at 17 years of age. He funded his education through his business and received a BSc in Physics and Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego. The first company he created was called FreeVue, an internet video conferencing product. He sold this to RealNetworks in 1995. In 1999, Philips’ new company Linden Lab was founded, the home to Second Life, a virtual world that has nearly a million active users and an annual spending of close to $1 billion. In 2008 Second Life also won Philip a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award.
12 years later, in 2011 Coffee & Power was launched. Coffee & Power was designed to connect people and small jobs or services. Using this team, Philip co-founded High Fidelity, where he now acts as CEO and is currently working on a prototype for a new global virtual world where people can perform several day to day activities on a virtual platform.
Philip’s body of work in this space has made it to The Economist, Inc Magazine and has awarded him opportunities to speak at Google Tech Talks and TED. Philip is also the recipient of WIRED’s Race Award for Innovation in Business in 2006.
