In his last competitive appearance on the track, Macey tore a muscle in his groin after completing just the second part of the decathlon, so he was unable to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. At the time, Dean was heartbroken, telling the media: “My heart is there, my mind is there but my body has finally given in.”
However, nothing can take away the motivational speaker’s impressive success in the World Championships, where he got a silver medal in 1999 and a bronze medal in 2001. At the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006, Dean finally got the reward his efforts had richly deserved – a much coveted gold medal.
Describing his career as “an amazing journey”, Macey says he has given 100% to the sport and has worn his Great Britain vest with pride. Since retiring, he has spent time commentating for Channel 4, the BBC and Eurosport and even tried his hand in the bobsleigh team at the 2008 British Championships.
