After obtaining a master’s degree in government, politics and policy, Luciana developed a strong passion for politics and began her working career in the government strategy unit of Accenture Plc. This role saw Luciana advising various groups of the UK government, ensuring that they worked efficiently and effectively in their operations. This then led Luciana to work for the NHS Confederation, working as their Government and Parliamentary Manager campaigning for the company in government. In 2007, Luciana accepted the role as Director of Labour Friends of Israel, her first true political role that saw her work to ensure stronger relations between Britain and Israel.
After impressing in the political sector, Luciana was selected for election as a member of the Liverpool Wavertree party. Winning the election, Luciana became Member of Parliament for Liverpool Wavertree in 2010 and began to campaign on a number of prominent topics. During her tenure for Liverpool Wavertree, Luciana brought attention to subjects such as dangerous dogs and their owners, food poverty and health and safety responsibilities. She was also elected to serve on the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, the Health and Social Care Committee and the Finance and Services Committee.
During her time as a politician, Luciana has received much discrimination due to her being Jewish. Luciana has fallen victim to Antisemitic abuse, now using her prominence to push the importance of abolishing antisemitism and acting as the Chair of the Jewish Labour Movement. She is also a prominent advocate for women in politics after she was the youngest female member of the front bench of Parliament from 2010-2015 serving in a government where only 34% were female. In reward of her commitment to politics, Luciana has received countless awards such including the Jo Cox Memorial Award for Bravery & Heroism, the Jewish Care Woman of Distinction Award and recognition in the Vogue 25.
Luciana has also held the role of Shadow Minister for Climate Change, making many prominent changes during her tenure. She was able to secure an amendment to the Energy Bill, introducing the Green Deal Apprenticeship Programme. Luciana has also served as Shadow Minister for Public Health, igniting her passion for wellbeing and later seeing her appointed as the first Shadow Minister for Mental Health. Luciana has now forged quite the reputation as a mental health advocate, campaigning for the topical subject and working a number of roles in support of the topic. She is currently the Chair of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance and an advisory board member of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute. For the past six years, Luciana has campaigned tirelessly for an understanding of mental health, championing how mental health is discussed and treated across the country. She has also been a prominent figure involved in the #wheresyourheadat campaign, supporting the vision to make mental health first aiders part of employer responsibility.
