Gyles Brandreth is widely known for his tenure in politics and his successful career as a television presenter and personality. Having presented everything from children’s tv to game shows and comedy shows, Gyles is at home with a large audience and is now booked as a host and after-dinner speaker for corporate events.
Formerly, Gyles has acted as a Member of Parliament for the City of Chester and as the Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. Widely remembered for his tenure in politics, Gyles introduced the Marriage act of 1994 and he has also authored the book Breaking The Code about his experiences. Before his days of politics, Gyles was a television presenter, presenting Puzzle Party children’s show. From that point on, Gyles has made countless appearances across British television, also presenting Public Opinion and hosting Knowitalls. Outside of presenting and appearing on TV shows, Gyles has also forged a reputation as an author. He has written a variety of fiction and non-fiction novels and is widely famed for authoring the Oscar Wilde Murder Mysteries. He has also written a number of books on Scrabble and words after his time on Countdown, such as the titles The Joy of Lex: An Amazing and Amusing Z to A and A to Z of Words, Word Play, World Championship Scrabble and The Scrabble Companion. He has also authored fiction books such as Oscar Wilde and the Return of Jack the Ripper, Who is Nick Saint?, Venice Midnight, Oscar Wilde and the Ring of Death and Here Comes Golly.
Outside of television and politics, Gyles has become involved with education, appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Chester in 2017. He has also received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Chester and been the President of the Association of British Scrabble Players- organising the first British National Scrabble Championship. Gyles has also acted as the President of the Oscar Wilde Society and was the former European Champion in Monopoly.
