From a young age, Briana Scurry had a prominent interest in sport, in particular Soccer. Beginning to play soccer whilst at high school, Briana played a prominent role in the Anoka High School’s Minnesota Championship win of 1989. Quickly establishing a formidable reputation on the field, Briana claimed awards such as the 1989 Minnesota’s High School Female Athlete of the Year and 1993 National Collegiate Goalkeeper of the Year during her youth career. From that point on Briana continually impressed fans and officials alike, ultimately landing a position on the field with the United States Women’s National Soccer Team.
Leading the team to countless victories, Briana made many firsts during her time playing soccer. She is widely known as one of the first African American professional female Soccer players and also one of the first openly LGBT players of the game. Also one of the first women to play in a woman paid professional league, Briana finished her career with 173 international appearances and won two gold and one silver Olympic medal alongside her teammates. The list of prestigious games she has played is never-ending, such including two WUSA Championships and a World Cup Champion win.
Unfortunately, Briana fell victim to a debilitating head-injury which consequently led to her retirement from the game.
