Mullery began his career with Fulham in 1958, playing 199 times for the club in a six year spell in the centre of midfield. He attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur in 1964, where he would help the club to one of the most sustained periods of success in their history.
His England debut would also follow, and in 1964 he would make the first of 35 appearances at international level.
He was a crucial ingredient of the Spurs team by 1967, when he helped lead the team to an FA Cup win in 1967, before adding to their trophy cabinet with a League Cup win in 1971 and a UEFA Cup win in 1972. He would make 312 appearances for the club before returning to Fulham in 1972.
Mullery's club performances earned him a role in the England team first for the 1968 European Championships. In a match against Yugoslavia, he would get sent off, becoming the first England player in history to get sent off in a competitive international fixture.
He kept his place in the team and made the plane for the 1970 World Cup where England were charged with defending their title. Though England would be beaten by West Germany in the quarter final of the competition, Mullery would prove to be one of the best players, scoring his only goal for England in the game.
Another of his memorable goals would come in his second spell at Fulham in 1973-74 when he volleyed from outside the penalty area to win the BBC Goal of the Season award.
Mullery hung up his boots in 1976 after a short spell at South African side Durban City, before taking charge of Brighton & Hove Albion in his first stint as a manager. He would return to manage Brighton for a second time in 1986, either side of spells with Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace and Barnet, as well as time spent coaching the Armed Forces Football Club in the Malaysian Premier League between 1990-1993.
Mullery became a fixture of the media in the mid nineties, reporting on football coverage for the likes of Sky Sports. He is a widely loved sports personality and is a fascinating football after dinner speaker, whose stories and reflections of his time in the game offer the perfect antidote to a hard day's work.
