During the first part of his career, Werner worked as a principal investigator at the Cornell University, aiming to target and improve the scalability and robustness of mission-critical enterprise computing systems. Whilst working at Cornell University, Werner developed many professional articles and reports that are highly regarded in the technology industry, most notably his 2003 thesis, Scalable Cluster Technologies for Mission Critical Enterprise Computing.
Werner has held multiple senior roles of a number of technology businesses, and even co-founded his own company in 1997 called Reliable Network Solutions. However, it wasn't until September 2004 that he was asked to join global brand Amazon, as the director of systems research. Providing highly influential knowledge and a key understanding of cloud computing, Werner’s career at Amazon only improved, and by 2005 Werner was appointed Chief Technology Officer and Vice-President of Amazon.
In 2008, Werner was awarded the CIO/CTO of the Year Award by Information Week, after his influential work in educating and promoting cloud computing to the world. He was also awarded Media Momentum Personality of the Year 2009, named a TechTarget Top 10 Cloud Computing Leader three years running and led the list of Wired's Top 10 Cloud Influencers and Thought Leaders in 2012. Not only that, but Werner also received the inaugural Holland on the Hill Heineken Award in 2014 for his contributions to US-Dutch economic relationship, proving the colossal impact that Werner has had in the technology industry.
