Jeff Dean is a leading computer scientist who fronts the Google AI division as the Senior Vice President of Google Research and Health. Having been a Senior Google Fellow since 1999, Jeff has co-designed and implemented many of Google’s most used features – including influence on MapReduce, BigTable, Google’s AdSense for Content, Google Translate and Google News. Also the co-founder and leader of Google’s deep learning research engineering team, Jeff is now a leading keynote speaker on artificial intelligence, technology and innovation.
During his studies for an MS and PhD in Computer Science, Jeff worked as a teaching assistant, instructor and research assistant at the University of Washington. Upon his graduation, Jeff became a member of the research staff at the Western Research Laboratory of Compaq Computer Corporation. During his time with Compaq, Jeff was the co-designer of Digital’s Continuous Profiling Infrastructure and the inventor of ProfileMe. He was also the co-designer and implementor of Swift, one of the fastest Java implementations worldwide. He was also a senior member of technical staff for mySimon Inc, a role in which he retrieved and cached electronic commerce content.
In 1999, Jeff was recruited to join Google in their artificial intelligence department. Now, Jeff is the Senior Vice President of Google’s Research and Health and continually impacts some of Google’s biggest projects. He has worked on prominent projects such as Spanner, LevelDB and TensorFlow amongst many more. He was also a member of Google Brain, studying artificial neural networks. Outside of Google, Jeff has shared his passions as a philanthropist, founding the Hopper-Dean Foundation to make philanthropic grants to other organisations. His foundation has made charitable donations to the likes of Stanford University, UC Berkley and Carnegie Mellon University to support their programmes on science, technology and engineering – promoting diversity.
Elected to the National Academy of Engineering and appointed a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, Jeff is now a popular speaker for corporate events.
