Marita Cheng has a keen interest in technology and has pioneered the world of robotics with her numerous start-up companies. As an entrepreneur, Marita has founded Aubot, Aipoly and Robogals, changing the future of the technology sector and spearheading females in technology. The founder and CEO of Aubot, Marita’s company is the manufacturer of telepresence robotics helping a variety of people to perform different tasks. The telepresence robotics are coined Teleport and helps individuals such as cancer sufferers to attend school, elderly people to socialise and disabled people to work. Pioneering the sector, Marita’s innovative Teleport has been widely sold to organisations from schools and hospitals to offices and museums.
Marita also founded Aipoly, born out of the Singularity University’s Graduate Studies Program. Whilst attending the program, Marita was inspired to found Aipoly and created the smartphone application to aid the community. Aipoly is an application that uses neural networks to deliver information to people who are visually impaired. Since using her technological genius to create Aipoly, the software has been downloaded an impressive 500,000 times and is available to users in 23 different languages.
Throughout her time in the technology sector, it has always been apparent to Marita that there was a lack of females in the industry. This realisation inspired Marita to found Robogals, a group that visited schools and educational establishments to teach robotics to female students. With the mission to get more women into the technology and robotics industries, Marita has been successful in seeing her business venture reach Japan, Australia, the UK and the USA. Now Marita is seen leading a number of different talks and workshops to encourage and inspire other females to take on the challenges of technology and robotics as she did. Since founding Robogals, Marita’s vision has been taught across 11 different countries and reached 100,000 girls.
Now Marita is highly sought as a public speaker, enriching audiences with her expertise of robotics, technology and innovation. Her talent and commitment have been highly rewarded throughout her career, winning awards such as 2012 Australian of the Year and 2014 Global Engineering Deans Council Diversity in Engineering Award. She has also been the recipient of the 2011 International Youth Foundation’s YouthActionNet Fellowship and recognised as the 2017 American Australian Association Next Generation Leader. Marita has gained votes and recognition in various lists too, such including one of the Forbes World’s Top 50 Women in Tech, Forbes 30 Under 30, Australia’s 60 Most Innovative Engineers and the Top 100 Influential Engineers in Australia. Most notably, Marita was the youngest person to become a Member of the Order of Australia.
