Professor Dame Wendy Hall is a role model to women in STEM, widely known for her work in developing the Microcosm hypermedia system – the precursor to the World Wide Web. At present she is the Regius Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, she is simultaneously furthering her research in multimedia, hypermedia, and Web Science. Wendy is now available to speak at a wide range of events where she discusses artificial intelligence, data science, and web science in detail.
Wendy holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Southampton, an MSc in Computer Science from City University London, and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Southampton. Continuing in the field of academia, Wendy served as a Lecturer in Engineering Mathematics at Oxford Polytechnic. She has since been a Lecturer in several departments at the University of Southampton, Senior Research Fellow at EPSRC, Head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, President of the British Computer Society, and Chair of BCS Council. She has also been the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering at the University of Southampton. Through all these roles, Wendy is helping shape science and engineering education and policy.
Wendy co-founded the Web Science Research Initiative in 2006 with stalwarts like Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Sir Nigel Shadbolt. Her TEDx Talk “A personal story behind the evolution of the web” chronicles her journey from being rejected for a job as she wasn’t considered fit to handle a class of men, to working with Sir Tim Berners-Lee. She has also been a Member of the UK Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and a former Member of the World Economic Forum Global Council on Digital Economy and Society. As Co-chair of the UK Government AI Review, she has spoken multiple times about AI policy at events worldwide for the UN, EU, OECD, World Bank, and numerous parliamentary groups in the UK. She is also a Member of the AI Council.
A Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute, Wendy was honoured with a DBE in 2009 in the New Year’s Honours List. She has also been awarded several accolades such as the Most Influential Woman in UK IT award by Computer Weekly, the Suffrage Science Award, the Duncan Davies medal, and the Anita Bord Award for Technical Leadership. She has also written books like “Four Internets: Data, geopolitics, and the Government of Cyberspace” and “Rethinking Hypermedia: The Microcosm Approach” amongst others.
