Since turning professional in 1991, he celebrated a 16 year long successful career, in which he represented both the United Kingdom and Canada over the course of his playing career. As a husband and father, John is a proud Ambassador for Borne, a medical research charity that investigates the causes of premature birth.
In 1997, 1999 and 2006, Greg was the British #1 tennis player, as well we reaching the ATP ranking of world No. 4 for in 1997 and 1998. Whilst competing at the US Open in 1997, he secured a finalist position. In response, Greg received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award and the ITV Sports Champion of the Year Award. Alongside the Great Britain Davis Cup team, he scored 30 wins.
Whilst at the Hall of Fame Championship in Newport, Rhode Island in 1993, Greg took part in his first career singles tournament title. In 1997, he reached the singles final of the US Open, and in 1999, Greg won the Grand Slam Cup. July of 2005 brought a successful season for Greg when he defended his title at the Hall of Fame Championship against Vince Spadea in the final.
By the end of 2005, Greg’s rank had risen to the high thirties. In the following year, on the 15th of May 2006, he regained the United Kingdom top spot, even passing Andy Murray when he got to the third round of the Rome Masters Event. After winning a Davis Cup match in 2007, partnered with Jamie Murray for the doubles victory over the Netherlands, Greg officially retired in a live interview with Sue Barker on BBC Television. Despite retiring, Greg stayed in the world of professional tennis to work for the Lawn Tennis Association as a talent and performance ambassador.
Greg has since embraced an active media career and has previously written columns for The Sun, The Daily Mirror and The Daily Telegraph. He also works for the British Eurosport television channel, a role in which he provided analysis during the station's coverage of the Australian Open. With his years of experience, he has supplied commentary for Sky Sports, during their coverage of the US Open and ATP World Tour Events, as well as the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon. Greg is also a successful speaker, presenting his extensive tennis knowledge during both client events and sporting competitions.
