Steve Peters initially trained in medicine, attending St Mary’s Medical School and founding his passion for the workings of the human mind and body. After completing his studies Steve worked several jobs in hospitals and medical facilities, before studying at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and becoming an NHS psychiatrist. For 20 years Steve worked for the NHS, supplying his expertise to the Special Hospital at Rampton and Bassetlaw District General Hospital as well as acting as a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Professor of Psychiatry at Sheffield University.
As of 2001, Steve began to pursue his elite sporting psychiatry, finding his way into the sporting world after he was recommended to the British Cycling team. Steve quickly established a reputable name in the world of cycling, with professionals such as Victoria Pendleton and Sir Chris Hoy crediting him to their sporting success. As well as British Cycling, Steve has also performed pivotal work with the England Football team and Liverpool Football Club. Ronnie O’Sullivan also credits his success to Steve, after he helped the snooker player during the 4th and 5th World Snooker Championships. In 2014 Steve was appointed by UK Athletics, going on to help Adam Gemili to hone his performance under pressure.
In a bid to further his reach as a psychiatrist, Steve founded Chimp Management. Established to provide training and consultancy, Chimp Management helps people to better understand their psychological wellbeing and to achieve their optimum performance. Steve is also a published author, having written the books The Chimp Paradox, My Hidden Chimp and The Silent Guides. His book The Chimp Paradox quickly gained popularity, selling 615,000 copied the book compares the emotional areas of the brain to that of a chimp. His other two books help readers to better understand their emotions, bringing understanding to emotional intelligence and improving mental wellbeing. Recently in 2021, Steve authored another book titled A Path Through a Jungle.
As a speaker, Steve covers all aspects of emotional intelligence and wellbeing. Continually helping people to reach their peak performance and better understand emotions, Steve has previously worked with high-profile clients such as the likes of Steven Gerrard, Anne-Marie and Guy Martin.
