Ian Mullen is a prominent figure in the healthcare industry, who has worked for the NHS throughout his career. A trained pharmacist and executive coach, Ian has made it his mission to better the healthcare of the UK. Ian was formerly the NHS Chairman for Forth Valley and currently works as the Chairman of Scottish Health Matters and a Non-Executive Director of Serco Scotland. He is also widely remembered for establishing several community pharmacies located in Scotland and has acted as the Chairman of the Scottish NHS Chairs Group. Today, Ian is booked as a speaker for corporate events covering a range of topics such as management, leadership, change management and healthcare
Ian was formerly educated at Heriot Way University, where he graduated with a BSc in Pharmacy. From the early days of his career, Ian worked as a self-employed pharmacist and began work as the Chairman of Community Pharmacy Scotland in the 1980s. Whilst working with Community Pharmacy Scotland, Ian was able to pioneer the introduction of new legislation regarding the establishment of pharmacies in Scotland. Ian then joined the NHS as a Vice-Chairman of the NHS National Services Scotland.
Since first joining the NHS in the 1990s, Ian has worked in a number of roles involved in healthcare. He has also been the Chairman of the Falkirk & District Royal Infirmary NHS Trust and Chairman of the Forth Valley Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Ian has also been a bid advisor of John Laing, been the Chair of the Health Advisory Board UK & Europe for Serco, a Non-Executive Bid Sponsor of Laing O’Rourke and Balfour Beatty and a board member of the Scottish Parliament & Business Exchange. Currently, Ian is committed as the Non-Executive of Serco Scotland, an Independent Consultant of Pfizer and a Chairman of Hub East Central Scotland.
Outside of working in healthcare, Ian is also a trained executive coach. Holding a certificate of coaching and a diploma in executive coaching, Ian uses his expertise in organisational change from his time with the NHS to educate and train numerous executives and CEOs in the art of business management. Frequently booked as a public speaker, Ian covers topics such as new hospital designs, technology in hospitals, change management, transformation and leadership delivered in engaging and insightful keynote speeches.
