A bomb disposal specialist, Hughes disarmed 120 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Afghanistan, saving the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. That he often did this without any protective clothing or any automated bomb defusing equipment made his acts of bravery even more outstanding.
When he received his George Cross from the Queen, motivational speaker Hughes’s actions were given the following citation: "Dealing with any form of IED is dangerous. To deal with seven victim operated IEDs linked in a single circuit, in a mass casualty scenario, using manual neutralisation techniques once, never mind three times, is the single most outstanding act of explosive ordnance disposal ever recorded in Afghanistan."
Of course, Kim does not just relate his incredible story when he speaks at events, he inspires audiences with his experience and knowledge of effective teamwork, leadership and how to succeed in the most difficult and challenging of environments.
This motivational speaker also exudes humility, saying of his achievements: "It's tough out there. It's a war zone. But it's my job. That's what I am paid to do."
