Jonathan Taylor is best known for bringing to light the gross misconduct and corruption that took place at his then-employer SBM Offshore – a Dutch oil services company. A former corporate and in-house lawyer, Jonathan worked with a top UK law firm in London, Cairo, and Muscat before joining as an in-house lawyer at SBM Offshore.
Sensing something askew was going on within the company, Jonathon served as a senior member of an investigation team, shortly after which he unearthed some groundbreaking evidence of corruption within the company. Jonathan decided that he did not want to be associated with such an organisation and decided to step down from his role within a matter of months. In 2015, Jonathan took the brave step of going public with this information in the Dutch magazine Vrij Nederland.
Thus unravelled a slew of events that changed Jonathan’s life. Soon after going public with the news, Jonathan was approached by a delegation of Brazilian MPs who were interested in hearing Jonathan’s presentation on the illicit payments from SBM to Brazilian petroleum company, Petrobras. This resulted in the resignation of the entire board of Petrobras as well as the President of Brazil Dilma Roussef’s impeachment – a trail of events that were set off because of Jonathan’s integrity.
This integrity did not come without a price for Jonathan to pay – in 2020 he was arrested on account of an Interpol Red Notice issued by Monaco by SBM Offshore who claimed that Jonathan “attempted extortion”. Released from detention in 2021, Jonathan received the support of numerous civil society organisations, NGOs, and charities all around the world. However, Jonathan regrets nothing as his actions resulted in SBM paying more than $840 million in penalties to different government agencies. Jonathan also received the 2021 Blueprint Prize for Whistleblowing. Over the years, Jonathan has offered his cooperation to authorities in the UK, Netherlands, France, Brazil, Switzerland, and the US, having even worked closely with the FBI soon after he went public with the intel in the Dutch magazine.
