Raj Adgopul spent his early adulthood grappling with the many difficulties that one faces when living in the slums of Mumbai. Having dealt with acute mental health issues that stemmed from instances of abuse and neglect from his family members, Raj understands the value of a strong and resilient mindset and attitude in life. Formerly the Director of UK Robotix, Raj is now available to speak to his audiences about his life story, ideas, lessons, and perspectives – helpful to anyone who is dealing with adversity they need to overcome.
When Raj arrived in the UK, he had a meagre £5 in his pockets but was equipped with mighty spirit. He learned very quickly that if he wanted to survive, he would have to develop a mindset to withstand any challenge that came his way. He had in many respects already employed this philosophy in his life when he moved to Mumbai to train as a nurse at 18 with virtually no support from his parents. His father passed away from alcohol intoxication when he was two years old, and his mother told him only to return to his village if he had made something of himself.
Raj worked hard and received his Postgraduate degree in Social Innovation and Leadership from the University of Buckingham and a Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from the University of Buckingham too. Now a TEDx speaker his TEDx Talk “Appreciation Redefined” chronicles his inspiring story as a first-generation Indian immigrant and economic migrant who was recruited by the NHS in 2002. He spoke at the O2 in front of 1000 audience members and has since spoken at Kings College Hospitals and the Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. Far from the fast-paced, cut-throat environment of Mumbai, Raj now leads a fulfilling life with his family in the UK with over 20 years of nursing experience. He was also the Former Head of Operations at uTalk Challenge India – a language learning competition that is known as Junior Language Challenge in the UK.
As someone who was diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other mental health issues that he required professional support and introspection to overcome, Raj’s story is inspiring to many. Raj’s ‘never give up’ attitude can be attributed to the upward trajectory of his story that started out with great adversity. Available to speak in more detail about his inspirational life, mental resilience, overcoming adversity and mental health, Raj Adgopul will make an excellent addition to your next event.
