Dr Matthew Walker is a professor, author and speaker, dedicating his work to the research and study of sleep. Throughout his career, Dr Matthew has conducted extensive research into the impact that sleep has on a person’s life and has since published over 100 research studies and contributed to countless TV programmes with his expertise. After studying Neuroscience at Nottingham University and claiming his PhD in Neurophysiology at the Medical Research Council, Dr Matthew has educated many in his fascination with sleep. Formerly, he worked as a Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School in the United States and today he works as a Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California. Outside of teaching students, Dr Matthew has also authored a book titled Why Do We Sleep, an international bestseller that documents his findings on what affects sleep, dreaming, changing sleep patterns and how you can harness sleep to improve your life.
Along with writing and teaching, Matthew has also acted as scientific counsel for various companies including the likes of Fitbit, Google and Hello. He has also acted as a scientific advisor to top sleep-related companies such as Shuni, Bryte and Oura. To further the reach of his expertise, Matthew also founded and is director of the Center for Human Sleep Science, and he is also a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.
