In 1991 Coltart first joined the professional golf circuit, having had success at both junior and amateur level. Soon after going pro, Coltart would participate in his first European Tour in 1993. In 1994 he won his first tournament when he finished top of the pile at the 1994 Scottish Professional Championships.
In 1995 he was part of the Scottish team that won the Alfred Dunhill Cup. In both 1994 and 1997, he would win the Australian PGA Championship, adding the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit in 1997.
Even greater success was due to follow as Coltart won the 1998 Qatar Masters, the first of two European Tour victories in his career. The other was the 2001 Great North Open. He would also play a round against Tiger Woods in the 1999 Ryder Cup, as part of the European Team and participate in five World Cups, representing Scotland. Over his 20-year career in golf, he would make 494 European Tour starts.
Coltart is regularly involved in the reportage of golf events, as a Sky Sports on-course reporter throughout Championships. A golf analyst able to dissect the fine details of the game, he is a top-class addition to golf coverage.
