Melanie Nakagawa is the Corporate Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer for Microsoft. Formerly a Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Climate and Energy at the National Security Council for the White House, Melanie is on a mission to find solutions to the persisting climate change issue. Melanie’s illustrious career began in 2003 when she served as a Senior Research Associate at the Public International Law & Policy Group. Equipped with a BA in International Relations from Brown University, MA in International Affairs, Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University School or International Service and a Juris Doctorate from American University Washington College of Law, she served as an Attorney for the International Program at the Natural Resources Defence Council.
Exhibiting a deep passion to solve the imminent climate change problem that is plaguing our world, Melanie has undertaken several roles throughout her career to make a difference on this front. She served as the Senior Energy/Environment Counsel as part of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where she advised the Chairman of the committee on energy, climate change and environment related legal matters. She has also been the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Transformation at the US Department of State, a Non-Resident Fellow on the Center on Global Energy Policy, and the Director of Climate Strategy at Princeville Capital.
